A Study in the History and Comparison of Religions This book is the outcome of my quest for wise insight in the area of man's religious seeking. No attempt is made in it to pile up masses of detail about the world's religions. Such materials contribute toward religious understanding only when they are seen in relation to the living core which makes this or that religious faith the unique affair that it is. And when that living core has been grasped, much detail is unnecessary except in the case of those who wish to become specialists in the history of certain religions. So I have tried in these pages to help the reader gain a sympathetic appreciation of the distinctive genius of each of the great religions of that which makes it the unique way of meeting life and destiny that it has shown itself to be-and historical details are introduced only so far as reference to them seems needed to illumine this genius and make it intelligible.
